My Last EVER End of Year Show

GuildHallComp

Tomorrow (Friday 13th March) will be my final Digital Media Show.

I have spend the last couple of weeks tying up loose ends in preparation for the Transmedia Show 2014.

We will be filling out the Guildhall in Winchester taking part in Dragons Den style ‘Pitch your Project’, Augmented Reality, Gaming and Networking.
I am taking part in an Art Work competition, in which the winners work will be displayed in the Guildhall’s cafe ‘Eighteen71’.

In place of the work that is already there:

My entry is the Low Poly Artwork I have posted above.

I am really  hoping that my artwork is liked by those judging, as I would absolutely love to have my work displayed in public. I only have been published online, never in real life. It would really make my year.

I have printed a few postcards for people to keep when looking at my work, I am pretty proud of how they have come out as the colours are lovely and vivid. The finish of the card is also very professional, I look forward to people choosing their favourite work to keep.

Postcards

I have been working on my branding, and I have new business cards to hand out on the day. I am extremely happy that my art work, cards, and website now all match. I have finally found a style to suit my personality.

I look forward to tomorrow morning, and setting everything up. Hopefully my stress levels go down, and I can really enjoy the day.
I can’t believe it is my final year at Uni, I am really going to make the most of my last few weeks.

…Santa Clause is coming!

As it is getting closer and closer to Christmas, Jason is really keen to get the App published. I caught up with Nate who has finished most of the mechanics within the game and is now waiting on artwork. I had a look at how the game is looking so far and I am really excited by the result so far. Jason originally wanted me to work on the characters and I am so glad I am able to create work for a real app game.

I am  happy that my original ideas for features within the game have been bought forward to the end result. The game will be a touch snowball fight in which characters appear around the scene and the player has to touch them before they disappear to score points. The characters within the game will be the surface team, and so I am very glad to be able to recreate the Surface family via illustration.

Jason showed me the assets that he has already created and gave me the layer styles via Photoshop to help me create the characters.

I created a few character sprite sheets using the Jason’s previous work as reference. I feel I have come so far already when I compare my work from earlier in the month.

As mentioned before I agreed with Jason that I would have an open-ended internship, and work for a month to see how it goes. Jason said he would like me to stay at Surface as a paid junior designer, and be involved with client projects in the following months.

I couldn’t be happier. This internship has been the best thing that has ever happened to me in my professional life.
YEY ME!

Icons

I am really happy about the progress I have achieved.
I am able to use Adobe Illustrator a lot more fluently, both using hot keys and also understanding the capabilities of the software and how I can use them within this project.

Before lunch I printed off all the completed illustrations and put them alongside the storyboard Jason and I originally created. I then talked through them and how I think they would work with animation with Jason and left him to look at everything I have done in the last 4 weeks. He provided me with feedback which was extremely helpful and it was great to get some fresh eyes on my work.

Flat Robot DesignsWe decided to make the illustrations look much more flat and simple, and this would match with the Surface branding.

On the Surface website the colours are flat with a white out logo, so the style needed to be recognisable.
I then spent the rest of the day working out ways I could make the illustrations self contained icons that would work well on their own as well as within and animation. Simplifying designs is a lot harder then I originally thought it would be. It takes good design theory to make a few shapes look great together!

Process

Vector Illustrations

It is my forth week at Surface and I feel that I am getting in the rhythm of things this week, I know I have my illustrations to finish before I move onto the animation and so getting started this morning was very easy.
I had a brief chat with Jason so he knew what I was doing and how well it is going before getting stuck into illustrator.
I used my sketches as reference and tried to keep the design as flat as possible.
I am currently unsure of the colour scheme but I will adjust this during final tweaks tomorrow before I move onto importing the vectors into Edge.

Flat Design

Box Flat Design

I created some illustrations similar to icons to practice Flat Design. Usually my designs have a lot of depth, but I want to be able to produce clean beautiful looking design that I can use while working on my Surface projects.

Making an illustration look simple is actually a lot harder than it looks, I always tend to get carried away and add to many shadows and gradients for lighting to create realism. However while producing Flat Designs I have to hold back on all the clever effects, which is actually pretty hard as I like to build up multiple layers.

Happy with my outcome for my first try!

Sketching Sketches is Sketchy

Robot Illustration

I think I am getting the hang of this whole rush hour train thing. I managed to actually get a seat on my way to work. Apart from feeling ill again, and having a horribly sore throat, I feel this day is going to go well.

This morning Jason and I had a meeting about the process page. We decided that the ‘tools’ direction I was going down was too generic and Surface want something to call their own.
We focused on the robots and how we could develop this idea to have each ‘icon’ featuring the surface bot.
Jason showed me a few examples of the illustrations and style he thought would suit and so I took this and drew out an icon / animation story board for each process.
I then sketched up how each process could flow to the other, so I could start on vector illustrations once I felt confident with my ideas.
I presented my sketches to Jason and was given the thumbs up to move forward on illustrator.
Using the inspiration around me from my sketches and the icons Jason had printed off for me, I completed 2 robot sketches.
I thought the flat style would be aesthetically pleasing and also easy to animate, so I kept my illustrations as simple as possible.
I am pleased with my progression with this project and by the sounds of things so is Jason.
I am keen to get these illustrations finished so will probably work on them a bit more before next week.
I have gained confidence today within myself and now understand that communication definitely helps when I feel a bit unsure about my work.
Managed to gain my confidence back and can’t wait for next week!

Rollercoaster of a Day

Digital Illustration Tools

Once again Monday morning has come around and I am back to my Internship at Surface.

I was lacking confidence as I don’t feel I am certain on how well I am doing. Going straight from Uni ,where you gain constant feedback, to diving straight in the deep end is pretty scary.

I really wish I was able to work faster and be more productive. I think these feelings are very common as a creative as I just feel such a massive need to do well and to produce beautiful work.

To make myself feel better I bought myself a new pair of headphones before work. I felt I deserved them and they would help me focus and prevent too many distractions around me.
I rang my parents to catch up and my dad made a very good point ‘it’s only your 4th day’. I am also comparing my work to professionals that have been designers for 5+ years, and I’m not even a graduate yet!

During our weekly catch up, Jason showed me how they are moving forward with the app. He mentioned how he really wants me to be involved but at the same time doesn’t want me to be involved in only small parts and would rather me have my own project, so I will be helping with creative input in the game and with character development before the game is shipped.
Today I focused on the process page illustrations, I have a idea of style that Jason would like me to achieve so I started creating the assets in Adobe illustrator.
I feel that spending a whole day illustrating is going to help me build my speed up. I also am starting to feel more comfortable using illustrator and found some features I did not know where there before. This made me realise that I truly am learning and developing my skills and I am producing artwork that looks clean and professional.
Jason seemed happy with the direction of my work, and I felt the more I communicate during the project the more comfortable I feel. Tuesday morning I will be illustrating the robot parts and then maybe watching some Adobe Edge tutorials to prepare me for the animations.
